APPLICATION DEADLINES 

  • The application process must be completed online through Submittable
  • Application closes January 15th at 12 noon MST for Summer/Fall May 15th - December 7th with notification by March 15th. 


 

Eligibility 

Residencies are intended as professional development opportunities for visual artists in all creative disciplines, writers in nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and composers. Proposals must be compatible with available working studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Creative vision and promise are the basis for selections. Mature as well as emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Applicants enrolled in a degree program at the time of application submission are ineligible for residency. Applicants over 25 residing in Wyoming and US citizens abroad are eligible. 

Duration of residency 

All residencies start on the 15th of each month and end on the 7th of the next month. No exceptions. 

Six (6) residencies are awarded each session. 

Character Statements 

Applicants are responsible for including contact information for three (3) character statements from individuals who know them on a day-to-day personal basis and are familiar with their creative work habits. 

Couples 

Couples who are artists or writers may apply individually, understanding that one partner may be accepted and the other may not. Each applicant accepted to Jentel Artist Residency will be offered a separate studio or workspace. Jentel is unable to invite spouses or partners to accompany artists in residence under any other circumstances. 

Collaborators 

Collaborators may be accepted; however, both need to submit separate applications along with a joint proposal. Please indicate in the proposal the requirements for the workspace. 

Location 

The Jentel Artist Residency is located 20 miles southeast of Sheridan (Population nearing 20,000) nestled in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains.

Facilities

Artist studios are brightly lit, 400 square feet and equipped with sinks and running water. Residents need to bring their own materials and laptops. Areas inside and outside are reserved for residents. Common spaces include a library, a great room and a large kitchen. Residents are offered separate living accommodations and workspaces. Questions? Financial Support 

A stipend of $300 is distributed in three separate installments at the end of each week in residence. Residents are responsible for their own personal living expenses, food and beverage, supplies, telephone charges, and any expenses related to work produced during the residency. Travel and shipping expenses to and from the Jentel Artist Residency are also the resident's responsibility. 

Fees & Deposits

There are no fees charged for the Jentel Artist Residency. A $100 reservation deposit is due within two weeks of notification of the residency award and confirms the residency. If an applicant cancels their residency reservation less than two months before it starts, the deposit is non-refundable. 

Children/Pets/Visitors

Accommodations for children and family members are not provided.

Pets are not allowed at Jentel Artist Residency. 

Visitor accommodation is available in Sheridan, 20 miles northwest of Jentel. 

Smoking/Vaping 

Jentel is a smoke-free environment. 

Privacy 

All application materials and work samples are confidential and retained for the use of the Jentel Artist Residency only. 

Community & Outreach 

Jentel Presents features an hour of readings and visual presentations by residents at a local venue in Sheridan during each 3-week residency period. Aside from Jentel Presents, any community outreach is completely optional. If you are interested in making connections with local venues, groups, or organizations, please let us know.

Writer

Please prepare the following:

  • Representative of genre planned for residency
  • Best writing completed in past two years
  • Include the title of the manuscript and date of completion on a cover sheet
  • Double-spaced, numbered manuscript pages in 10 to 12pt type
  • Maximum of 20 pages for play/screenwriting, fiction and creative nonfiction sample
  • Maximum of 10 pages of poetry sample
  • Work sample is a Mac/PC compatible file

Visual Artist

Please prepare the following:

New media and new genre artists (filmmakers, video artists, installation, and multimedia artists) may submit one of the following to represent their work: 

  • Video Work Sample: Up to 5 minutes of time-based work
  • Image Work Samples: 10 digital images 
  • Samples must be work that was completed in the past two years
  • Description of fewer than 50 words contextualizing the work
  • No PowerPoint
  • Maximum of 2MB for each file
  • Required image data: title of piece, media, dimensions, and date completed
  • Work samples must be Mac/PC compatible.

Composer

Please prepare the following:

  • Include 1-5 audio files (up to 30 MB each)
  • Upload audio samples as MP3 or as a link to media from SoundCloud
  • Title the audio file to correspond with the title of the score
  • Include separate musical scores (PDFs up to 10 MB each) for one or two audio files
  • Include a description of the transmission/performance method (PDF) when using other than a traditional      score
  • Work sample is a Mac/PC compatible file
