Jentel Artist Residency Application Guidelines
Application Open/Close
- All application materials, including resumes and work samples, are submitted online through Submittable.
- Applicants should check their Submittable profiles for correspondence pertaining to their submissions before deadlines.
Winter/Spring Sessions (with notification by November 15th)
- For three (3) week residencies taking place January 15th – May 7th
- Open February 1st Close September 15th at 12 Noon (Mountain Time)
Summer/Fall Sessions (with notification by March 15th)
- For three (3) week residencies taking place May 15th – December 7th
- Open October 1st Close January 15th at 12 Noon (Mountain Time)
Eligibility
Residencies are intended to provide professional development opportunities for visual artists in all mediums; writers in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry; and composers across musical genres. Proposals for self-directed residencies should be compatible with available studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Artistic merit and promise form the basis for selections. Mature as well as emerging artists are encouraged to apply.
- Students enrolled in a degree program at the time the residency would take place are ineligible for that residency session.
- Applicants must be 25 years of age or older to be eligible for a residency. Applicants must be US citizens or must reside in the US during the year of the residency for which they are applying.
Duration of Residency
All residencies start on the 15th of each month and end on the 7th of the next month. No exceptions.
Six (6) residencies are awarded each session.
Character Statements
During the application process, Jentel requests contact information for three (3) individuals who know the applicant on a personal basis and are familiar with their artistic practice.
Awards
A rotating panel of experts and professionals in the arts and humanities independently reviews applications and supporting materials. Final awards of residencies are at the discretion of Jentel.
Couples
Couples may apply individually, understanding that one partner may be accepted and the other may not. Each applicant accepted for a residency will be offered a separate studio or workspace. Jentel Artist Residency does not permit spouses or partners to accompany residents under any other circumstances.
Collaborators
Collaborators may be accepted; however, each collaborator must submit a separate application along with a joint proposal by all collaborators. Please indicate the workspace requirements in the proposal.
Reapplication
After five years have passed, previous residents may apply again for a residency. Past residents must submit a new application accompanied by new work samples.
Location
Jentel Artist Residency is located 20 miles southeast of Sheridan, Wyoming, in the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains.
Facilities
Accommodations for each resident include a private bedroom, a shared living area and kitchen, and a separate studio. Residents need to bring their own materials and laptops.

Financial Support
A stipend of $100 is distributed at the end of each of the three weeks in residence. Residents are responsible for their own personal living expenses, food and beverages, supplies, and any expenses related to the production of work during the residency. Travel and shipping expenses to and from Jentel Artist Residency are also the responsibility of each resident.
Fees & Deposits
There are no fees charged for Jentel Artist Residency. A $100 reservation deposit is due one month after notification of the residency award and confirms participation in the residency. The deposit is non-refundable if the reservation is cancelled less than two months before the residency is scheduled to start.
Application fees are non-refundable.
Children/Pets/Visitors
Accommodations for children and family members are not provided.
Pets are not allowed at Jentel Artist Residency.
Visitor accommodations are available in Sheridan, 20 miles northwest of Jentel.
Smoking/Vaping
Jentel Artist Residency offers a designated smoking and vaping area.
Privacy
All application materials and work samples are confidential and are retained for the use of Jentel Artist Residency only.
Community & Outreach
Jentel Presents features an hour of readings, visual art presentations, and musical compositions by residents at a local venue in Sheridan during each 3-week residency period. Each resident presents for 10 minutes about their work and artistic process. Videos of past presentations can be found on the Jentel YouTube channel.

- No PowerPoint
- Maximum of 2MB for each file
- Required image data: title, media, dimensions, and date completed
